NY Salmon/Steelhead Report as of 10/1/2025
The low water continues for the salmon river. Pineville is flowing at 198 cfs. Highs this week are in the mid 70’s with temperatures dipping into the 50’s. It looks like there will be a little bit of rain next week but still dry for the most part. With the low flows the lower fly zone has been closed in order to ensure that enough salmon reach the hatchery to keep the stocking program going. The popular lower fly-fishing section located just below the hatchery was closed on Sept. 15 and will remain so until DEC collects enough salmon eggs, or at least through Oct. 31.
Kings and Cohos are stretched through the rivers and are in good numbers. Lots of fish to catch right now as we are in full swing and new fish moving in daily. As the lower, warmer water continues, there are still salmon that haven’t come through yet. However, they WILL move up regardless and there are plenty to catch still. Salmon are holding in the pools as they begin to stage. Focus on the deeper pools especially with the low water.
A good choice for flies right now are streamers. Woolly buggers, leeches, egg sucking streamers, and other variations (#4-8). Having these in different weights and colors will give you a good shot at fresh salmon through the river. Streamers are good for working the deeper pools and covering water. With the low water try going smaller and drab. Eggs and flashy nymphs (#10-14) are also a good choice especially as the salmon eventually spawn. Eggs are most effective downstream of major staging areas where the eggs drift downstream. Swinging fly’s has been working well recently.
Salmon are a blast on the fly rod. We are stocked up in the shop with gear and flies. Stop by to get set up and prepared for a trip to NY. Remember to always respect the wildlife and look at the specific guidelines of where you are fishing on the NYS DEC website. Currently we have everything you need to catch these beasts! Tight Lines!
