NY Salmon/Steelhead Report as of 10/22/2025
Low flows with Pineville still flowing at 256 cfs. Highs this week are cooler in the 50’s with temperatures at night dipping into the 30’s. The rain this past weekend bumped flows but they are dropping now. Some more rain this week should help with flows. With the low flows the lower fly zone has been closed in order to ensure that enough salmon reach the hatchery to keep the stocking program going. The popular lower fly-fishing section located just below the hatchery was closed on Sept. 15 and will remain so until DEC collects enough salmon eggs, or at least through Oct. 31.
Kings and Cohos are now mostly in the mid to upper part of the river and are spawning in the gravely areas. Lots of fish to catch right now as we are in full swing and new fish moving in daily. Focus on the deeper pools especially with the low water. Still some good fishing left for salmon as the run was a bit late this year. Steelhead are moving into the lower section eating eggs. Steelhead fishing has definitely been picking up as more and more move into the lower section.
The most steady producer as of late has been eggs, especially with the salmon spawning. Streamers can also be effective. Woolly buggers, leeches, egg sucking streamers, and other variations (#4-8). Having these in different weights and colors will give you a good shot at fresh salmon through the river. Streamers are good for working the deeper pools and covering water. With the low water try going smaller and drab. Eggs and flashy nymphs (#10-14) are also a good choice especially as the salmon eventually spawn. Eggs are most effective downstream of major staging areas where the eggs drift downstream. Swinging fly’s has been working well recently.
Salmon are a blast on the fly rod. We are stocked up in the shop with gear and flies. Stop by to get set up and prepared for a trip to NY. Remember to always respect the wildlife and look at the specific guidelines of where you are fishing on the NYS DEC website. Currently we have everything you need to catch these beasts! Tight Lines!
