New to fly fishing? This hands-on seminar covers everything you need to get started! You'll learn how to assemble your rod, attach your reel, and rig up a leader. From there we'll cover the fundamental casting techniques including the Pick-up & Lay-down, Roll Cast, and False Cast — plus how to adjust your line length in the air for accuracy. By the end you'll have a solid foundation to build on. No experience necessary! This class moves right into our Intermediate class-
Ready to take your casting to the next level? This seminar dives into loop control — the key to accuracy, distance, and presentation. You'll learn what makes a loop wide, medium, or tight, and how to control tilt, trajectory, tempo, tracking, and timing to improve every cast. Whether you're fighting the wind or targeting a specific spot, this seminar will sharpen your skills on the water.
#2 🎣 Expert Dry Fly Fishing & Drag-Free Drift Seminar- 3pm-6pm plus on Water
6 Student Limit- $100 pp
Want to stop putting down rising trout? This classroom, lawn, and on-the-water seminar (CT fishing license required) teaches you how to present a dry fly naturally so it fools even the wariest fish.
You'll learn what drag is, why it spooks trout, and most importantly — how to prevent it. Topics include how to read currents, choose the best position to cast from, and control your drift. We'll cover a full toolkit of mending techniques including Hump Mends, Upstream & Downstream Water Mends, the Reach Mend, Curved Mend, and S-Mend — all demonstrated on the water. We'll also touch on leader and tippet setup to help you get that perfect drag-free presentation.
Whether you're fishing a small stream or a large river, the skills you learn here will immediately improve your success with dry flies.
John Field Bio
John Field is an FFI Master Casting Instructor, photographer, writer, and angling host. To date, he has written three books, Fly-Casting Finesse (2015), ACA’s Beginner’s Guide to Fly Casting (2018), and Fly Fishing for Trophy Striped Bass (2024). John’s articles have been published in Tail Fly Fishing, MidCurrent, Fly Fisherman Magazine, Canadian Sportfishing Magazine, and more. He was a co-producer and cameraman for Larry Dahlberg Productions for Larry’s show, Hunt for Big Fish, on ESPN. John served as president of the American Casting Association and president of the New York Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
