Tim Flagler on The Farmington- 2026
Tim Flagler on the Farmington September 18–19, 2026
Join us for two days with Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions, one of the most respected voices in fly tying and fly fishing education, as he brings his signature blend of underwater footage, bug science, and on-the-water know-how to Farmington.
Friday, September 18 · 6:00–8:30 PM
What Trout Like to Eat & The Flies to Feed Them
Tim's most popular program, built around stunning underwater and macro footage of the aquatic insects, baitfish, and crustaceans trout actually key in on — and the flies that imitate them. Expect a close look at real bug life pulled straight from the stream, matched against the patterns that fool selective trout. A must-see for anglers who want to fish smarter, not just cast more.
Saturday, September 19 · 10:00 AM–1:00 PM
Three Rods, Three Approaches: Dry Fly, Euro-Nymphing & Trout Spey
An outdoor, hands-on session covering three distinct rod setups and when to reach for each: traditional dry fly, Euro-nymphing, and single- and two-handed trout spey. Tim will break down the advantages of every approach, the flies that go with them, and how to read water to pick the right tool for the day. Bring your questions — this is a rare chance to see all three systems demonstrated side by side.
About Tim Flagler
Tim Flagler is a fly tyer, instructor, and filmmaker who, together with his wife Joan, owns Tightline Productions in Califon, New Jersey. He picked up a fly rod and a bobbin in college in the early 1980s, and what started as tying for himself has grown into one of the most-watched fly tying education platforms around: his Tightline Video YouTube channel has drawn more than 126,000 subscribers and over 42 million views, with tutorials also featured on MidCurrent, Trout Unlimited's national site, and the Orvis Learning Center.
What sets Tim's teaching apart is the underwater and macro videography he shoots himself — pairing fly-tying instruction with real footage of the naturals those flies are meant to imitate. In Winter 2022, Fly Tyer magazine named him Fly Tyer of the Year, and he continues to write the magazine's "Beginner's Masterclass with Tim Flagler" column. He guides year-round for South Branch Outfitters, ties patterns carried by Fulling Mill, co-hosts the monthly "Tie-Off" series alongside Tom Rosenbauer (Orvis) and Cheech Pierce (Fly Fish Food), and leads hosted trips to destinations including Patagonia, Montana, British Columbia, and the Lake Erie steelhead tributaries.
Whether he's at the vise or on the water, Tim's approach comes back to the same idea: understand what trout are actually eating, and everything else — fly selection, presentation, rigging — follows from there
